Frequently Asked Questions Page

A. No they are not totally dust free, somewhere between 90% - 95%, but when compared to the old style sanding machines available at hire shops, the state of the art equipment we use is far more advanced in dust collection, and altogether superior machinery with powerful performance and handling, but they are quite noisy.

Q. Do i have to clear the furniture out of the room before you arrive ??

Q. How long will the work take ??

A. There is no hard and fast guide for this. The timeframe depends on the size of the area, the wood species and what condition the wood floor is in, plus the overall scope of works involved, remember that rough uneven floors will take longer than a relatively flat floor to complete. It will usually take around 1 day to complete between 15-20 sq m of floorboards in relatively good condition.

Q. Do i need to have the gaps in my floor filled ??

A. This is greatly a matter of preference, there is no rule that says gaps need or have to be filled, if you require your gaps filled the cost for this service is from £5.00 per square metre.

Q. We heard that the resin filler used to fill floor boards, can fall out after a while, Is this true ??

A. Yes this can happen, filler is prone to drop through the gaps, this can be due to many things, too much movement in the boards, caused by either thin or worn boards, boards that have shrunk/contracted over the years, loose boards or too much space in between joists causing the boards to flex, which can work the filler from the gaps loose over time.

Q. My floor doesn't look in that bad of a condition but needs tidying up a bit - is there anything you can do ??

A. It well may be a maintenance Sand & Seal could well be the answer - the floor is given a cleaning with our buffing machine, then the floor is lightly abraded with anything between a 60 grit and a 120 sanding screen, this will typically take off about half a layer of lacquer and can remove minor scuffs, scrapes and scratches, but it will not take out deep scratches and gouges!! the area is then vacuumed and then a coat or coats of lacquer applied.

Q. Can i hire the machinery and sand my floor myself ??

A. You can but usually the results are quite poor and not comparable to a professional finish - we often get calls from people that have attempted to sand their own floors and are unhappy with the results, to put this right nearly always means a full re-sand to achieve a smooth flat finish.

Remember - It's harder to sand a badly sanded floor, than one that's not been sanded before.

Q. When is it the best time to have my floor sanded, before or after the decorators/ builders have been in ??

A. The best time to have your floors sanded would be just before the painting of the skirting boards, Although the machinery gets very close to the edge, they do not sand under the skirting, also the skirting boards are the only part of your room that could possibly get scuffed by our machines, but other than that, we should arrive once building work and decorating have finished.

Q. What Seal's do you use ?? and will the area smell when you apply it ??

NB - Water based lacquers have been the industry standard for well over a decade !!!

Q. Can i change the colour of my floor ??

Q. I have seen a Refurbished floor in a magazine or at a friends house, Can you guarantee our floor will look like their floor ??
